Reined Cow Horse Training...

Cow horses are amazing athletes. Speed, agility, finesse and versatility are just a few qualities that cow horses possess.

When I think of reined cow horses, I think of the old bridle horses of California and the methods in which they learned by.
Jaquima to Freno, or Hackamore to Bridle, describes the steps in training the bridle horse. Tradition dictates that colts were to be started in the hackamore or rawhide bosal and gradually, over time, the bosal would decrease in size. As the horse progressed in training and in age, it would eventually learn to carry the spade bit along with a bosalita. This is known as the two-rein stage of his training. Simply because of the two reins that the rider would manage. One set for the hackamore and one for the spade bit. As the horse matured, it would eventually be ridden in the spade bit by itself and would earn the title of Bridle horse.

I've been fortunate enough to ride along with some amazing bridle horseman. I admire their abilities with a horse and I'm grateful for the information they have shared with me. My goal is to one day make them proud of my abilities and somehow repay them for their lessons.

Does your horse have what it takes to make a great cowhorse? Give us a call, we would love the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your horses' potential as a reined cowhorse.
